If the front axle shows signs of damage, you should in principle be allowed to weld it, because for technical inspection in many countries, the front axle is considered to bere as a subframe (you should ask the supervisory authority how this is regulated in your country). The question is whether this is smart; the process of continuous decomposition makes your axle is certainly not getting any better, you are just covering the holes.
Be careful and mount a new full front axle, so you can be sure you don't have to worry about it anymore. Moreover, the probability that you will have to do the repair later is high, our classic VWs are often no longer used as a daily means of transport.
The front axle is supplied with mounted needle bearings, hexagonal bolts and locking nuts to hold the springs (torsion bars), the rest of the parts will have to be transferred or possibly purchased in addition.
The front axle comes in a transport paint, for aesthetic and longevity it is wise to paint this front axle.
All front axles are only suitable for left-hand drive (LHD) cars.
Note: The front axle from 1960 to 7/1965 can also be used for VW models until 1960, if you remove the steering damper bracket (until 1960 these were not yet mounted) as well as the axles for the steering gear, you can mount them without any problem.
