These metal mounts are fitted with vulcanized rubber, so that engine vibrations are transmitted as little as possible to the body and chassis, for optimum driving comfort.
When the engine tilts sharply, in the worst case to the point where the car can spontaneously upshift, it's time to take a closer look at the gearbox mounts.
Don't worry, you're not the only one with cracked rubbers. The vast majority of our classic cars have experienced this, and it's a typical age-related problem. That's why it's advisable to replace all rubbers when restoring a car. To do this, the engine must be disassembled, a task best avoided immediately after the first test drive. Most garages familiar with classic Volkswagens therefore recommend replacing the rubbers as soon as, for whatever reason, the engine and/or gearbox are dismantled.
In addition to the standard rubbers, urethane copies are available for some models. This material makes the connection stronger, without compromising comfort.
It's even possible to fit the gearbox without rubbers. However, this option is only suitable for off-road and racing vehicles, where the engine and gearbox must be able to function optimally in all conditions. Comfort is not an issue.
