Product description
At first glance, this indicator lens appears to be completely clear, but behind the outer lens is a separate amber inner lens. Volkswagen used this construction at the time to meet the different requirements of export markets while retaining the same basic design.
For the American market, clear lenses without the amber inner lens were used up to 7.1963. From 8.1963 onwards, this clear version continued to be used for the Italian market, among others, while an amber indicator light was used for the remaining markets. For this purpose, a separate amber inner lens was fitted behind the clear outer lens.
Amber bulbs as we know them today were not commonly available at the time. By using a conventional clear bulb behind the amber inner lens, Volkswagen could still achieve the required amber indicator light without changing the clear outer lens.
If you prefer a completely clear appearance today, the amber inner lens can be removed and an amber bulb fitted instead. This keeps the outer lens completely clear while the indicator still emits an amber light. Always check which indicator colour is legally permitted in the country where the vehicle is used.
