Product description
A synchronizer ring ensures that two rotating parts inside the gearbox are first brought to almost the same speed before the gear is actually engaged. During shifting, the synchronizer ring is pressed against the conical surface of the gear. The resulting friction equalizes the speeds, allowing the gear to engage without gear grinding.
Synchronizer rings are wear parts. High mileage, frequent or fast shifting and normal wear gradually reduce the effectiveness of the friction surface. A worn synchronizer ring is usually noticeable when one particular gear becomes increasingly difficult to engage or starts to grind, especially during fast shifting. If slower shifting or double-declutching noticeably reduces the problem, this can also indicate a worn synchronizer ring.
However, not every shifting problem is caused by the synchronizer ring. If several or all gears are difficult to engage, the clutch, gear linkage and the condition and oil level of the gearbox should also be checked. If a gear jumps out while driving, the selector sleeve, gear teeth, shift fork or bearings may also be worn.
The gearbox must be dismantled to properly inspect and replace the synchronizer rings. If the gearbox is being completely rebuilt anyway, it is advisable to replace all worn synchronizer rings at the same time. Volkswagen originally used different versions depending on gearbox type and gear. The synchronizer ring listed here is used as a replacement ring for several gears, so the old ring may not always look exactly the same as the new one.
