Product description
Synchromesh rings are used to ensure smooth gear changes. They bring the speed of the shaft and the gear to be engaged to approximately the same speed before the gear is actually engaged.
From August 1960, Volkswagen used a fully synchronized gearbox on most versions, with the exception of reverse gear. This can often be noticed because reverse may grind if it is engaged too quickly. The gears that are not engaged rotate freely on the shaft. Engaging a gear connects the selected gear to the shaft.
During shifting, the gear initially rotates at a different speed from the shaft. Movement of the shift fork moves the selector sleeve towards the gear and presses the synchromesh ring against the conical friction surface of the gear. The resulting friction equalizes the speeds. Once the speed difference is sufficiently small, the selector sleeve can move further and the teeth engage, allowing the gear to be selected without grinding.
Synchronization works during both upshifting and downshifting. Shifting very quickly or forcing the gear lever accelerates wear because the synchromesh ring does not have enough time to equalize the speeds. Therefore, shift calmly: apply light pressure to the gear lever and only push it further when the gear is almost ready to engage by itself.
Synchromesh rings are wear parts. With the gearbox dismantled, wear can be checked by pressing the ring against the cone of the gear and measuring the gap with a feeler gauge. As the ring wears, this gap becomes smaller. Compare the measured value with the wear limit specified in your workshop manual. If the gap is smaller than the prescribed minimum value, the synchromesh ring must be replaced.
