If your engine is equipped with an oil filter, it should be replaced at every oil change. The oil filter keeps the oil clean. If impurities enter the oil flow, this can cause serious damage to the bearings.
Type 1 engines were not fitted with a modern oil filter until the so-called ACD engines were introduced at the end of 1992. Prior to this date, the oil sieve behind the sump plate had to retain all dirt. It is incomprehensible that Volkswagen delayed this measure for so long when it was applied immediately when the Type 4 engines were announced and was therefore aware of the dangers of a poorly filtered oil.
The aftermarket industry saw this problem happening much earlier and, in the mid-1970s, developed special oil pumps equipped with a modern oil filter and removable oil filter holders. For a longer life of your engine, it is advisable to consider installing such an oil pump or an additional oil filter holder (mentioned under the related parts tab).
Note: For all spin-on oil filters, you must first fill them with engine oil, apply a layer of oil to the sealing ring and then fit them. Thus, the oil pump has oil at the first start after a new filter. The oil layer on the sealing ring allows you to easily unscrew the filter at a later date.
