Nowadays it is normal for a car to be equipped with a radio and speakers as standard, but this was not the case with our classic VWs.
Volkswagen made the preparations, but the radio and speaker had to be ordered as an extra option. The preparations consisted only of making the necessary cut-outs to mount the speaker and radio. The radio location was provided with a blind plate and the speaker location was carefully finished.
For the first Karmann Ghia models, the speaker cutout on top of the dashboard was finished with a plastic grill. at that time, plastic was not yet UV-resistant. Under direct sunlight, it becomes brittle, which is usually only noticeable when removing it, when the attachment points break spontaneously.
