The front shock absorbers of the Volkswagen Beetle 1200, 1300, 1500 and the Karmann Ghia after August 1965 and of all Volkswagen Thing model years are mounted on the upper side of the front axle by means of a mounting bracket which is screwed onto the shock absorber.
On the underside of this bracket is mounted the rubber stop which ensures that the suspension travel is stopped when it is deeply compressed. If this rubber is not present, there is no spring limitation and the shock will be compressed all the way, and since the forces here are very high, your shock will not survive it.
Therefore, the stop rubber must be of very high quality, its hardness playing a major role. There are many reproductions whose rubber is far too soft and does not meet Volkswagen specifications. The rubber we offer meets 100% of Volkswagen's specifications and has the same hardness as the original part.
You can easily test the hardness, if you can get the cover over the rubber easily enough, the rubber is too soft, if you have to put a lot of effort and use glycerin as a lubricant, there is a good chance that the hardness is good.
So we recommend you order glycerin at the same time, it makes assembly much easier, and once assembled, you are assured of a safe construction without having to worry about your shock not surviving too much compression.
Mounting tip: To mount the dust cover on the stop rubber, in addition to glycerin, use a string with which you pull the lip of the rubber over the plastic edge of the dust cover, the same way you would mount a window rubber.
