There are several ways to perform a restoration. Grinding out the defects, welding a piece and finishing with putty is still a common method. This method is inexpensive but it will never be 100% invisible.
The best way to restore is to drill the sheets at the spot welds and replace them as a whole. You will then be sure that nothing will be visible from your restoration.
For the rear of your Volkswagen Vanagon, it's possible with this complete rear panel identical to the original, it's the ultimate way of restoration. You will not regret it, especially if, after the restoration, your work is rewarded with an increase in value.
