Product description
If the cylinder heads are disassembled for any reason, it is not advisable to reassemble the old pushrod tubes, as the risk of leakage on Type 1, Type 3, CT/CZ and WBX engines is very high.
Volkswagen indicates that this is possible for these engines, but only if the tubes are still in perfect condition, which is not the case for 99% of engines.
Rust is a problem in all air-cooled engines, affecting the tubes to such an extent that permanent sealing can no longer be guaranteed. Only if the tubes are intact or only slightly affected can they be reused. In the case of Type 1, Type 3, CT/CZ and WBX motors, the harmonica part must be removed slightly, as they have to be mounted under slight tension.
Like the original, the standard tubes are not treated, which explains why they rust quickly. To get rid of them for good, it's best to opt for stainless steel. Some motors are even available in stainless steel only. This has nothing to do with the way your Volkswagen left the factory back then, but they stay clean and you can reuse them on Type 1, Type 3, CT/CZ and WBX engines after removing them slightly if necessary.
This does not apply to Type 4 motors, which have no harmonica ends.
Disassembly tip: Make sure the seem is facing upwards to avoid leaks.
