The heating is activated by a knob on the old Volkswagen and by levers on the last years of construction.
The heating cables that run to the rear of the car and control the heat exchangers are connected to this button or levers.
The cables are connected in pairs and divided in two on the left and right exchangers for the last years of the Beetle, Karmann Ghia, type 3 and VW Thing models. For older models, it is a long cable that is connected to the center of the central button, the latter also applies to the Split Bus.
For the Volkswagen Buses from 1967 to 1972, the cables of the right and left heat exchanger are placed on separate handles, after which they were placed on a lever and the cables were connected to each other. That is why you will find two cables here, one for the left heat exchanger and the other for the right heat exchanger. From 1972 to 1979, three cables were used, one under the dashboard and the other two to the exchangers. From this period on, we talk about a front and rear heating cable.
All cables (except the universal model) are supplied with a thickening at the end for mounting in the clamp of the heat exchanger arm.
If you have a Kit-car based on a VW chassis (Buggy or own design) for which no suitable cable is available, you can use a universal cable. These universal cables have no thickening at the end and are extra long, you can easily cut them to size, you have to tighten the mounting bolt in the mounting clamp a little further than if there is a thickening present.
