Product description
Unprotected dynamo connections can be the cause of unpleasant incidents. On the Volkswagen Type 3, protective rubber caps were fitted as standard on these connections. Curiously, it was not until 1971 that this measure was applied to the VW Beetle.
There are two types of cap, the difference being the thickness of the cable or the size of the cable entry hole. On the Beetle dynamo, the thick cable is on the D+ connection and therefore has a large grommet hole, the DF connection has a thin cable, for which you use the protective cap with the small grommet. On the Bay Window Bus equipped with a Type 4 motor and with the Vanagon alternator, only the protective cover with the large through-hole (B+ connection) is used.
The version with the small through-hole is also used on cars fitted with a seat-belt warning system, to protect the switch that handles it. In addition, on Type 3 models with fuel-injected engines, the same protective cap was used to protect the terminal pole of the oil pressure switch for idle advance.
In many cases, the wrong protective cap has been used, a thick cable with a protective cap designed for a thin cable, which will cause the rubber to tear. It's important to use the right protective cap for the right cable.
Many after-market protective boots are only suitable for a thin cable and of such poor rubber quality that they dry out within the foreseeable future. Our rubber boots are identical in fit and appearance to what Volkswagen produced at the time, except that a modern rubber compound has been used, which has ensured that the service life has surpassed that of the original.
