Product description
The vacuum box on the distributor of an air-cooled Volkswagen engine automatically adjusts the ignition timing according to engine load. The vacuum box is connected to the carburetor by a vacuum hose.
When the accelerator pedal is depressed, the vacuum in the intake manifold changes. This change in vacuum is transmitted to the vacuum box which, with the aid of a diaphragm and siphon, rotates the contact point plate in the electric distributor. This allows ignition to be advanced or retarded, so that the ignition timing is always optimal for current driving conditions. This ensures smoother engine running, better acceleration, lower fuel consumption and less risk of pinging.
Vacuum box operation is easily checked with a strobe light. If the ignition timing doesn't change on acceleration, there's a good chance that the vacuum box is defective and needs replacing. When doing so, also check the vacuum hose: cracks, dryness or a loose connection can also lead to a malfunctioning vacuum box.
A properly functioning vacuum box and vacuum hose are therefore essential for the performance and life of your air-cooled Volkswagen engine.
