On newer diesel engines, the gauge is held in place at the top by a plastic guide.
This guide serves not only to tighten the gauge, but also to seal it. If you put the guide in hot water for a while, it will slide easily over the gauge holder. Slide it until it snaps onto the metal part of the gauge holder.
