The baffle plates sandwiched between the cylinders, like all other sheet metal parts related to cooling air, have an important function : they ensure maximum utilization of the cooling air. After the air is blown through the cylinders, it is reflected to avoid being lost immediately, resulting in a lower cylinder head and cylinder temperature.
Starting with the 1969 model year, Volkswagen revised these plates for the Type 3 engines (this was later implemented in the CT/CZ engines as well) instead of a straight piece of sheet metal, where a large amount of cooling air is still lost, the revision fits around the cylinders allowing the cooling air to swirl around the cylinders and cylinder heads even better, resulting in lower engine temperatures. According to Volkswagen, this revision was not necessary for the Type 1 engines, but they would have been better off doing it, a lower cylinder head and cylinder temperature is always an improvement in an air-cooled engine, and should the cooling become too much there is always the thermostat that closes those cooling valves in a timely manner.
Developed for Type 3, CT and CZ engines, these cooling air reflection plates can also replace the flat plates on a Type 1 engine, provided the cylinder thread rods are in 8 mm. If your engine is equipped with 10 mm threaded rods, increase the notches from 8 mm to 10 mm.
The assembly is the same as the original : place them between the cylinders and the pushrod pipes, clamping between the threaded rods. If you are going to mount the heat conduction sheet metal on the underside you will have to modify it a bit (bend and knock it into shape), a type 3 and CT/CZ engine already has modified sheet metal as standard.
If you don't mount the underbody sheet metal (the cooling air slide) you won't have any benefit either, so spend some extra time adjusting this for maximum results. On the CT/CZ engines this chute is also fitted as standard by Volkswagen that says enough.
Note : you cannot use these cooling air plates in combination with the pushrod pipes (#1762).
