Product description
On air-cooled engines, the thermostat operates the cooling air control valves (mounted at the bottom of the cooling housing) and, on some models, also the valve in the air filter for drawing in hot or cold air. The thermostat is mounted in the exhaust side of the cooling air flow, on the right side of the engine under the cylinders. The thermostat's job is to get the engine to operating temperature as quickly as possible and also keep it as constant as possible. An engine without a thermostat and control valves reaches operating temperature too slowly and does not reach temperature at all in cold outside temperatures (in addition, heater operation will then be greatly reduced). Too low an operating temperature has adverse consequences for the engine such as loss of power, higher fuel consumption and shorter service life. The model thermostat originally fitted to air-cooled engines, the so-called bellows thermostat, is unfortunately no longer made by Volkswagen. However, a replacement type is available that was originally produced by VW Mexico. This is a so-called wax thermostat, it works on the same principle as in modern autos. In order to use this thermostat, an adjustment to the thermostat holder is required, download the manual through the "documentation" tab.
Attention : this type of thermostat has 1 disadvantage. When it breaks down, it will not open the valves in the cooling house like the original model, but the valves are kept in closed position even when the engine has reached the operating temperature. So regular checking and vigilance is important. However, the technology of this type is more modern and reliable than the so-called bellows thermostat.
