Intensive use wears out the lock mechanism. The hook may no longer grip the lock bracket properly, and the door may open spontaneously. If the lock has lost its spring, it is not necessary to replace the entire lock for newer models, as the spring is available separately as a spare part. Unfortunately, this is not possible for older models.
We recommend that you order new locks immediately. If the lock is so worn that it no longer functions properly, you can assume that the latches or door wedges also need replacing.
On VW Split Busi models up to 1963, there is no difference between the left and right mechanisms. On VW Buses with left-hand drive, only the right-hand door can be locked from the inside, while the left-hand door can only be locked from the outside. On right-hand-drive Bus models, it's exactly the opposite. You don't want both doors to be lockable from the inside? In that case, you can install two separate locks without locking. However, for the 1960 to 1963 model years, only complete locking mechanisms are available, so this configuration is not possible.
