If your carburetor needs servicing, you may consider replacing all seals and membranes, but you must be sure that this solves the problem. If there is any play on the throttle shaft or other valves, it will have to be addressed in a very different way. By this we mean that the source of the problem must be tackled, i.e. all shafts must be fitted with new bushings.
As there are not many VW enthusiasts who can do this job themselves and that it will be expensive if you have it done by a specialized company, the choice to buy a new carburetor is quickly made.
Note: A Pierburg 2E3 has a provision for the heating element in the lower part of the carburetor. On this replacement carburetor, there is only one empty hole. This hole can be drilled and tapped to mount the heater, which is recommended in cold climate countries (Northern Europe).
