During the development of the Trekker one point was essential, the vehicle had to be usable on any terrain. Volkswagen used the chassis of the Beetle as the basis. However, this chassis was modified in many areas to improve off-road capability.
The shock absorbers of the Trekker never came from a Beetle or from another Volkswagen model. They were specially developed for the Trekker. The design was not so much different in shape, but mainly in strength. The shock absorbers had higher tensile and compression strength. At low speeds they were 1.5 times stronger than those of the Beetle. At high speeds they were even twice as strong. This contributed greatly to the off-road performance of the Trekker.
BOGE produced these shock absorbers under license from Volkswagen. Unfortunately original examples have not been available for many years. BOGE is also not allowed to reproduce these shock absorbers without permission from Volkswagen. However, reproduction is possible. The shock absorbers listed here are an example of that.
These shock absorbers are faithful reproductions of unused original BOGE examples. The biggest challenge was finding a completely new, unused BOGE shock absorber. It had to carry the Volkswagen logo and the correct part number. After years of searching this was finally achieved. The result is a perfect reproduction.
Therefore remove the old Beetle shock absorbers from under your Trekker and replace them with shock absorbers identical to the original models. These are the shock absorbers with which the Trekker originally left the factory. This restores the driving characteristics as they were originally intended.
Note: Up to and including July 1973 the Trekker was equipped with swing axles at the rear. From August 1973 this was changed to independent rear suspension (IRS). This explains the mention of the model year.
