On Type 1 engines built between 1959 and 1963, the spark plug cables are held in place by a rubber collar. Here, the cables are first inserted into the holder, then the spark plug cap is fitted.
From 1963 onwards, Volkswagen adopted plastic collars for these engines, into which the cables could be easily snapped. At first, Type 3 engines had only plastic collars into which the spark plug cable snapped.
On Type 1 engines, this collar was attached to the coolant sump, while on Type 3 engines, a special bracket was installed for this purpose.
From 1976, on 1200 cc engines, the bracket on the side of the cooling box, which previously held the fuel line, was removed. The left-most spark plug cable clamp was replaced by a combination clamp that could accommodate two spark plug cables as well as the fuel line.
The three-cable spark plug cable holder was only used on these engines from then on. Volkswagen subsequently withdrew the double cable holder from its range, and only supplied the triple variant as a spare part.
This cable holder can be used without problem for just two cables, but those wishing to use their 1200 cc engine exactly as it came from the factory should fit two holders for two cables and one holder for three cables.
