Shaft circlips, also known as washers, are available in different versions, but all have the same function: to secure a shaft or an object. This can be done in two ways: by an external groove, found mainly on the outside of shafts, or by an internal groove, which is designed to hold a bearing or other component in place, for example.

Locking rings do not last indefinitely. Corrosion or frequent (dis)assembly cause them to lose their clamping effect over time. In the event of corrosion, it is always advisable to replace the snap ring.
