In many cases, the master cylinder or clutch cylinder is still in good condition, but the dust cover is bad. In this case, there's no need to buy a new brake or clutch master cylinder - if nothing else is wrong, you can simply replace the dust cap or dust cover.
Volkswagen used several brands of master cylinders and clutch cylinders, so if the brand of master cylinder or clutch cylinder is mentioned, check it before ordering, or look at the shape of the dust cover to order the right type. Comparison with the photo will also reveal whether a reproduction master cylinder has been used.
