Product description
The alternator of the Type 4 engine is cooled by a fan wheel mounted on the alternator. This fan wheel blows air through the alternator to cool it during operation. The air that is warmed in the process is directed out of the engine compartment through a rubber duct.
Between the alternator and the engine tin there is a rubber sleeve that guides this warm air out of the engine compartment. On many Volkswagens this rubber has hardened over the years due to the constant temperature changes, often resulting in cracks caused by aging.
On an air-cooled engine it is important that the engine compartment remains as cool as possible. For this reason the engine is sealed off with tinware and rubber seals to keep it separated from the warm air underneath the vehicle. Any opening in the engine tin can allow warm air to be drawn back into the engine compartment, which negatively affects engine cooling. That is why the warm air from the alternator is also routed outside the engine compartment.
A damaged or torn rubber duct can allow warm air to enter the engine compartment, which can cause the engine temperature to rise. To prevent this, a worn or cracked rubber should be replaced immediately.
