Air-cooled engines cannot extract the heat for the heating from the cooling water, so heat exchangers are used. The air with which the engine is cooled also passes through the heaters. The heat from the exhaust gases is used to heat the air that is blown in. The temperature is controlled by the flow, this is done by opening or closing a valve.

A worn out or leaking exchanger must be replaced immediately. This is not only forbidden by law because the exhaust system is no longer tight, but also dangerous for the occupants, as the risk of exhaust gases entering the car in the event of a leaking exchanger is very high.

If the leak is on the connection between the exhaust and the heat exchanger, a repair tube can still provide an outlet on a Type 1 or Type 3 engine, but if the leak is at another location (or a leak on another type of engine), replacement is the only correct way.

All heaters are supplied without mounting material and/or seals, please order them additionally.

If you do not need a heater, engines type 1 and type 3 can also be equipped with heater tubes (see the related parts tab), which means that the complete heater exchanger (and thus also the complete heating system) is omitted.

In addition to the standard exchangers for type 1 engines, you will find standard heat exchangers, chrome-plated exchangers and high-performance exchangers in grey or black transport paint for several years, click on the reference for more information. Black or grey transport paint is intended to prevent rust in warehouses. If you want to keep the heat exchangers in paint, you will have to treat it regularly with heat resistant paint, immediately after starting it will let itself go largely. Exceptions to this rule are heat exchangers #1080 and #1081, which have a high quality topcoat, but this also peels off due to heat development at the connecting flanges.
