Our Volkswagens are full of screws, bolts, nuts and washers that are not all made for a particular model, but are used universally.
These parts are recognizable by their part number beginning with "N", from the German word "Normteile", which means "standard parts". It may be a standard part, but that does not mean that it is still readily available today.
Below is a list by VW model of what the bolts listed here are for, among other things, and how many parts are needed in total if you want to replace them all for this application.
Bay Window Bus:
- crankcase halves mounting on top of Type 4 engines 1 piece
- engine body mount brackets Type 1 1600cc and Type 4 1700cc 6 pieces
- brake pressure manifold on body 2 pieces
Vanagon:
- crankcase halves mounting on top of Type 4 injection engines 1 piece
- DF airco pump mounting screws from 1.1983 1 piece
