After years of loyal service, the tailgate or engine lid locking mechanism may begin to show signs of failure, with internal wear usually being the cause.
If available for your VW Bus model year, be sure to order the locking latch (listed in the options tab), as it is often worn out from frequent use.
Note: For construction years up to 3.1955, the same locking mechanism was used for the hood as that used for the tailgate from 4.1955 to 7.1967.
