The self-tapping sheet metal screws listed here are exposed in many applications, which is why they were chrome plated at the time.

Chrome plating is still possible in practice, but it is no longer used for screws, with stainless steel being a much better substitute. If the head of the screw is visible after assembly, you can polish it until it is very shiny, after which no difference can be seen between chrome-plated or polished stainless steel. The great advantage is that it will never rust again and will have the shine of chrome, a win-win situation.

These self-tapping sheet metal screws are identical to the original in size and design and have been used on various VW models for various applications. Below is a list of all the applications and the number of parts you would need if you were to replace them all for that application.
