When unlocking the door lock, a spring ensures that the hook remains open. If this were not the case, the locking hook would turn back to the locking position and you would not be able to close the door. If you want to close the door and it no longer falls into the lock, the spring is often the cause. But good lubrication of the lock can also be the cause.
The lock is greased at the factory but must be lubricated regularly with engine oil. Above the lock of the door rabbet is a hole that must be closed with a white plastic cap, this is the lubrication point of the lock mechanism. Apply a little oil during each technical service and your lock remains well lubricated.
Volkswagen slightly modified the locking mechanism for the 1972 model year, also using a spring of a different length. If you needed a new mechanism for your 1968-1971 model, you would automatically have the lock that was applied from 1972.
The springs are still available for both locking mechanisms, so it was not necessary to purchase a completely new lock for a broken or torn spring. If you are not sure if your 1968-1971 Volkswagen has already been equipped with a new mechanism, measure where the spring is mounted and compare it to the lengths mentioned with the springs.
