Most Volkswagen Buses originally started their lives as workhorses and were therefore often used intensively. When a VW Bus is fully loaded or fitted with a partition wall, the engine sound becomes less noticeable. As a result, gear changes may not always happen in time, causing the engine to reach excessively high RPM.
To prevent this, Volkswagen equipped certain models with a rotor featuring a rev limiter. Once the maximum RPM is reached, this rotor briefly interrupts the ignition to prevent the engine from over-revving.
Attention: a 5-kilo-ohm rotor is only suitable for conventional ignition systems. The 1-kilo-ohm version is exclusively intended for vehicles that were factory-equipped with electronic ignition.
