Product description
If you are looking for a rebuilt engine, Paruzzi is the right place. We have been building our own rebuilt engines since 1998 and have accumulated extensive experience in doing so. With now many hundreds of satisfied air-cooled customers, overhaul has no secrets for us. We have the knowledge and expertise to deliver an engine that we stand behind 100% and on which we give a 2-year warranty.
Due to rising prices, in the past we have supplied overhaul engines from other companies as a cheaper alternative to our own. However, these engines did not meet the expectations you have with an overhaul engine. Hence, in 2010 we decided to only supply engines that meet our high quality requirements 100%, with the price tag coming in second place. Quality over quantity is fully applicable to our rebuild engines. A new engine should be a one-time purchase, after which many years of carefree driving should follow. Our overhaul engines have already proven themselves in this.
A good overhaul goes much further than just fitting new bearings, cylinders, pistons and cylinder heads. As early as the disassembly of the old engine, the parts are checked and sorted and looked for any strange wear and tear or abnormalities. Then the parts eligible for overhaul are cleaned, measured and checked again and finally overhauled. Here, of course, the tolerances as specified by VW are strictly observed.
To give an example; the crankcase is lined. We rarely see a crankcase from a used engine that still appears to be within tolerance after measuring the bearing seats. Line boring and fitting oversized bearings is then the only option to build a reliable engine. Only new bearings in this case will significantly reduce the life of the engine. The first year (or the first couple of years, depending on the miles driven) may not cause many problems, but when the engine has accumulated more miles it is waiting for problems. This example obviously applies to other parts of the engine as well. For this reason, it is very important that literally every part of the engine be looked at and assessed individually. Experience and craftsmanship are the key to success here. Only this way a good rebuilt engine can be delivered.
Paruzzi overhaul engines include the following operations and/or parts:
- In an overhaul crankcase, the crankcase is cleaned and checked for cracks.
- All wear-sensitive points are checked.
- The crankcase is machined by line boring, seat axial bearing and cylinder seats flattening.
- If applicable or desired, a new original crankcase is used (in which case the above points do not apply).
- Grinded or new original crankshaft.
- Remanufactured connecting rods (bead blasting, straightening, big-end resized, new piston pin bushings), or new connecting rods.
- New bearings, always installing "steel-backed" bearings.
- New camshaft in the 1600cc and tuned engines, if in good condition a checked camshaft in the other engines.
- New drive sprocket on the crankshaft.
- New cam followers.
- New oil pump with oil pump cover.
- New or flattened flywheel.
- New original springs for the oil pressure plungers.
- New piston -and cylinder set
- New cylinder heads where the valves are tested for leaks before assembly.
- New stainless steel pushrod pipes.
- New gaskets, original crankcase cover, original valve covers with brackets and spark plugs.
- Remanufactured rocker shafts with new valve adjuster bolts and nuts, new original (spring) washers and retaining clips.
The engine is fully assembled with special synthetic assembly paste that ensures the moving parts are well lubricated when the engine is first started. Had engine oil been used for this, there would be no lubrication or far too little lubrication during start-up because the oil would have long since run out between everything by then.
The compression ratio is calculated separately for each cylinder so that it is exactly the same for all cylinders (this is not the same as compression pressure). In standard engines, the compression ratio is set to the original value. In tuned engines it is set higher to get more efficiency from the engine.
All Paruzzi rebuilt engines are suitable for unleaded gasoline. Driving on LPG is done at your own risk, the problem with LPG and our air cooled engines is the temperature. The engine gets hotter than when driving on gasoline and this is something that is not desirable. The standard air-cooled boxer engine needs all its cooling and any kind of temperature increase is undesirable. Should you start driving on LPG any form of warranty will be voided.
Trade-in
Our engines can be delivered on the basis of trade-in, where the discount on trade-in of the old engine is not yet included in the purchase price of the new engine. To keep the quality high, the trade-in motorcycle is critically checked on a number of points that must be in order. We are going to use your trade-in engine as the basis for a new rebuilt engine, so it must be in order. If the trade-in engine is satisfactory, the trade-in value will be reversed (see also "Trade-in discount").
- The engine must be able to rotate freely (must not be stuck) and there must be no oil left in the crankcase.
- The crankcase must not be cracked both externally and internally.
- Corrosion must be within the limits of permissibility.
- The engine must be complete, as the rebuilt engine is delivered.
- The trade-in engine must be the same type as the rebuilt engine purchased. For tuned engines, the trade-in is a 1600cc engine.
If it is not possible to meet these conditions, it cannot be traded in. The return shipment is entirely at the buyer's expense, also the transportation costs that must be incurred to return a rejected engine (the engine in this case is completely disassembled) are at the buyer's expense. When purchasing a replacement engine, the return process is described in detail so that it is quick and easy.
Tuned overhaul engines (rotating part)
The sporty driver has also come to the right place in terms of engines. The 1641 and 1775 cc overhaul engines are included in our product range. These engines are certainly as reliable as a standard overhaul engine, provided they are driven sensibly. If the engine is purchased just to drive it at full throttle, the lifespan will be significantly shortened. These tuned engines, just like the standard exchange engines, have a warranty period of 2 years, making Paruzzi the only company of its kind to offer such a long warranty on tuned engines as well!
1641cc rebuilt engine with revised or new crankcase
For just that little bit more we have the 1641cc with W100 camshaft in our program. This engine can be rebuilt with the original carburetor, but it is advisable to increase the number of nozzles. To get more power from the engine, it can also be built with 2 single or 2 double carburetors. An oil temperature gauge is highly advisable, especially when the engine is built into a Bus or convertible. This engine is equipped with:
- Rebuild or new crankcase of your choice, full flow oil filter at additional cost.
- 1641 cc piston -and cylinder set.
- Engle W100 camshaft with a new A-grade camshaft sprocket.
- Reinforced cam followers.
- Swivel-feet valve stem bolts to reduce valve stem wear.
- A higher compression ratio.
The 1641cc with W110 camshaft goes a lot further and is therefore intended for the more sporty driver, this engine is not suitable for use with the original carburetor. We recommend fitting two single carburetors or two double carburetors to get the maximum power out of it. Often it is also better to give the engine more oil cooling by means of an additional external oil cooler, controlled by an oil thermostat. This is especially applicable when the engine is installed in a bus or convertible. In any case, an oil temperature gauge is highly recommended. When, as an extra, the engine is equipped with a full flow oil filter, an extra oil cooler with thermostat can be easily connected to it afterwards, without having to dismantle the engine. So think carefully about this, it is always better for the life of the engine to mount a real oil filter and it is with this system so easy to realize additional oil cooling. This engine features:
- New original crankcase machined for full flow.
- Crankshaft with counterweights, 4140 chrome molybdenum.
- Lightened flywheel, reinforced flywheel bolt with larger washer.
- Crankshaft and flywheel are balanced together
- Engle W110 camshaft with a new A-grade camshaft gear.
- Double trust camshaft bearings.
- Reinforced cam followers.
- 1641 cc piston -and cylinder set.
- Cylinder heads with reinforced valve springs.
- Stronger pushrods.
- Reinforced rocker shafts.
- Swivel-feet valve adjuster bolts.
- Higher compression ratio.
Note : Proper nozzle assignment and/or adjustment is vitally important especially with tuned engines. If you don't have the proper knowledge in-house, don't start it and have a professional install and tune the engine. To be clear; most engine damage is caused by an incorrectly built engine and/or tuning, which is never eligible for warranty.

1775 cc overhaul engine with new crankcase
A few years ago, the 1835 cc engine was the most popular choice when it came to more power. Due to the thin cylinder wall of the 1835 cc and the relatively little power difference between an 1835 and 1775, the 1835 cc had to give up its place with us to the 1775 cc. This 1775 cc exchange engine is another step up from the 1641 cc. Due to the larger displacement, this engine will deliver significantly more power than the 1641 engine. This engine will be built with the following parts, among others:
- New original crankcase machined for full flow.
- Crankshaft with counterweights, 4140 chrome molybdenum.
- Lightened flywheel, reinforced flywheel bolt with larger washer.
- Crankshaft and flywheel are balanced together
- Engle W110 camshaft with a new A-grade camshaft gear.
- Double trust camshaft bearings.
- Reinforced cam followers.
- 1775 cc piston -and cylinder set.
- Cylinder heads with reinforced valve springs.
- Stronger pushrods.
- Reinforced rocker shafts.
- Swivel-feet valve adjuster bolts.
- Higher compression ratio.
This engine is not suitable for use with the original carburetor. We recommend you install two single carburetors, or better, two double carburetors to get the maximum power out of it. You will also need to give the engine additional oil cooling using an additional external oil cooler, controlled by an oil thermostat. In any case, an oil temperature gauge is highly recommended. If, as an extra, the engine is equipped with a full flow oil filter, an extra oil cooler with thermostat can be easily connected to it afterwards, without having to take the engine half apart again. In this way, the original oil cooler also remains mounted so that the oil is also cooled when the car is not moving, for example in a traffic jam. So think about this carefully, it is always better for the life of the engine to mount a real oil filter and it is therefore easy to realize extra oil cooling with this system. Mounting an additional oil sump is also well worth considering. At higher speeds and/or sharp cornering, you are then always assured of sufficient lubrication. This also depends on the driving style, but the sporty rider would be well advised to increase the capacity of the crankcase with an extra oil sump.
Note : A correct nozzle arrangement and/or adjustment is of vital importance, especially with tuned engines. If you do not have the right knowledge, do not start it and have the engine installed and tuned by a professional. To be clear; most engine damage is caused by an incorrectly built engine and/or tuning, which is never eligible for warranty.
You have a jewel in your engine bay with this engine but be aware that you are not alone with this rotating part. As with any form of tuning, everything must be tuned to it, so think of an extra oil cooler, larger carburetors and a different exhaust system. Good knowledge is therefore vital. If you are not sure about this, do not start it, but hand it over to a professional. This overhaul engine is only available with a new crankcase where an old 1600 cc double port engine must be traded in.
