Product description
The beating heart of your classic Volkswagen engine is its camshaft. The movement of the valves creates enormous friction which, without proper protection, can lead to catastrophic wear. For years, an invisible hero has won this battle in motor oil: ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl Dithiophosphate). Under high pressure, this chemical compound forms a solid protective layer on metal surfaces, preventing direct contact.
Unfortunately, the amount of ZDDP in modern motor oils has been considerably reduced to protect the catalytic converters in new cars. This leaves conventional engines, which depend on ZDDP, vulnerable. Fortunately, some oil brands have retained or reintroduced special classic motor oils to the market, such as our Firezone and Kroon Oil Classic oils, but even these are still too sparing of ZDDP.
The right amount of ZDDP
The optimum amount of ZDDP for your engine depends on its use:
New engine (running-in phase): At least 2500 ppm ZDDP is needed.
Standard engine: A level between 1200 and 1500 ppm is required.
Performance engine: Do not go below 2000 ppm.
Fortify your oil with Cam-shield™.
To reinforce essential ZDDP levels, Cam-shield™ enters the scene. This additive has been specially developed to give the camshaft and valves of your classic engine the extra protection they need. Every 15 ml of Cam-shield™ adds 1600 ppm of zinc to one liter of engine oil. With this data, you can calculate exactly how much additive you need to achieve your desired ZDDP level.
Cam-shield™ is available in three convenient formats, differing only in content:
236 ml dosing bottle
88.5 ml bottle
44.3 ml bottle
