Product description
From 8.1965 onwards, Volkswagen fitted the Type 3 with a separate rear wheel hub. Unlike versions where the brake drum and wheel hub form a single unit, this system has a separate wheel hub mounted on the axle shaft. This allows the brake drum to be replaced without having to replace the complete wheel hub.
A wheel hub is normally subject to very little wear. Replacement is usually necessary when the splines have become worn, the hub is distorted or the threaded holes for the wheel bolts are damaged. Damaged threads are a particularly common reason for replacing the wheel hub. The wheel bolts can then no longer be tightened to the correct torque, meaning that the wheel can no longer be secured safely.
Worn splines are almost always caused by play developing between the wheel hub and the axle shaft. This can happen if the axle nut has come loose or was not tightened to the specified torque during installation. Always use a torque wrench and follow the factory specifications. A distorted wheel hub is usually the result of a collision or another severe impact and can cause vibrations, brake drum runout and uneven braking.
