A number of hinges on various Volkswagen models are secured with Phillips head screws that can sometimes be extremely tight.
Rust is usually the biggest problem here. Therefore, first spray the screws thoroughly with a rust penetrant. In combination with WD-40, a chemical reaction is created that helps break up the rust. Then try to loosen the screws using a large Phillips screwdriver. If this does not work, use an impact screwdriver. An additional advantage of an impact screwdriver is that the screw head is less likely to become damaged, something that often happens when using a regular screwdriver.
The screws listed here are 100% identical to the originals. The head has the correct diameter of 16 mm and a thread length of 10 mm, unlike universal screws which usually have a 14 mm head diameter and a 12 mm thread length. These are therefore not standard fasteners, but screws that were specifically used by Volkswagen at the time. As a result, they cannot be compared with inexpensive universal Phillips screws.
If you find working with a Phillips screwdriver inconvenient, you can also choose screws with an Allen socket. Although these differ from the original, they are much easier to install and remove. These versions can be found under the “Alternatives” tab.
