Product description
The heat exchangers fitted to all Type 4 engines used in the Volkswagen T2 Bay are equipped with an inspection cover in the air duct. This cover provides access to the cooling-air flap inside the fan housing.
This flap allows the cooling air to leave the fan housing, while preventing warm air from the engine compartment from being drawn back in. Without this flap, the fan would use heated air to cool the engine. This can cause serious engine damage, as an air-cooled engine must be cooled with the coldest possible outside air.
In 1973, Volkswagen introduced a modification. From that point onwards, the inspection cover was no longer supplied with a permanently attached gasket. The cover and gasket became two separate parts, and the inspection cover was modified accordingly.
For an original inspection cover that has never been replaced, the gasket listed here was therefore only used from 1973 onwards. When fitting a new inspection cover, as listed under the “Related parts” tab, this gasket must always be used. This also applies when the new inspection cover is fitted to an engine from before 1973.
