Product description
When removing the engine, the rear engine tin is removed before the engine can be moved rearwards and taken out of the vehicle. Without removing this panel, there is insufficient space to remove the engine in the normal way.
The engine tin also plays an important role in engine cooling. It closes off the rear of the engine compartment and prevents hot air from underneath the engine, including heat from the exhaust system and cylinder heads, from being drawn back in by the cooling fan. If this panel is missing, the engine is partly cooled with air that has already been heated.
Driving without the engine tin is therefore strongly discouraged. Especially at higher outside temperatures, on longer journeys and under heavy engine loads, the risk of excessive engine temperature increases considerably.
The engine tins are available in various versions. You can choose between black or chrome-plated and, depending on the version, with or without holes for the heater hoses and the intake manifold preheating tubes.
These reproduction engine tins were originally intended for a limited number of engines and production years. For installation on later 1300cc and 1500cc engines, as well as 1600cc engines, the tin underneath the crankshaft pulley must also be replaced, as stated in the application.
For the T2 Bay, this only applies through 7.1971. For all other Volkswagen models with a Type 1 engine, this applies throughout the entire production period.
Note: On versions with holes for the preheating tubes, only the cut-outs are provided in the panel. The formed sealing sections around the preheating tubes are not included. If you want the installation to match the original, these sections must be partly cut out of your old engine tin and transferred to the new panel.
