Product description
With the introduction of dual intake engines in the 1971 model year, the oil cooler was mounted on the outside of the fan shroud, the latter received an additional housing to accommodate the oil cooler.
The mounting bolt and nut with which the housing was attached to the gearbox in the upper left corner became difficult to reach and is no longer easily accessible from the side of the engine. Volkswagen decided to remove the nut and put a socket nut in the hole, so you no longer needed a wrench to hold it in place.
If the threads on the sleeve nut are damaged, or if it was drilled to make a bolt-nut assembly, you will need to remove the nut and install a new sleeve nut.
If you have a crankcase without a sleeve nut, it's a good idea to press the sleeve nut into the hole, which makes it easier to attach the bolt, even on single inlet engines, so when the oil cooler is housed inside the fan shroud.
