Bumper brackets are fitted through slots in the fenders or front panel.
For a neat finish, the remaining space is sealed with rubber and, on the latest series of Karmann Ghia export cars fitted with safety bumpers, these are made of hard plastic.
Rubber hardens over time, and hard plastic eventually becomes brittle and crumbly. Not surprisingly, this is also the case with your car, in which case replacement is the only solution.
