The door handle guards protect the paint on the doors from scratches that can occur when opening them if rings are worn, among other things. They are considered an authentic accessory because they were also provided by the VW dealer at the time, even though they were not an official Volkswagen accessory.
The door handle guards are clamped under the handle, so it is necessary to remove the handle for assembly.
