Product description
* for the Volkswagen Beetle, this star represents 1 and for the Karmann Ghia, 4 in the chassis number (VIN)
This plug with metric thread (M26 x 1.5) is used for two purposes :
Automatic transmission drain plug for ATF fluid:
On the semi-automatic transmission of the Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia, this drain plug is used on the underside of the gearbox to drain the ATF fluid.
Fuel Tank Cap :
Mainly in the Scandinavian countries, the fuel tank of the Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia is equipped with an additional connection for auxiliary heating, an option that has often been chosen as an extra in these cold countries. VW Thing military vehicles often had a standard heating system, in the civilian version a system with a heat exchanger was chosen. If no heater was fitted, the connection was sometimes present but closed by a plug. This link was used for a very short time, both for Scandinavian and non-Scandinavian countries, with the Volkswagen Beetle and also with the VW Thing for all countries for which the VW Thing was used as an army vehicle. If you have an original fuel tank with this extra fitting and you do not use heating, the cap closes the hole.
