The door check rod not only prevents the door from opening beyond the maximum, but also stops the door in the event of a gust of wind.
The most frequent reason for replacement on the VW Beetle is wear on the vulcanized rubber of the door sensor, which causes the clamping area to disappear, or, on the Karmann Ghia, wear on the mounting locations.
On the Beetle and Karmann Ghia, they are identical on the left and right, but when you install them, you'll discover that they're reversed with respect to the other side.
