The fuel line runs from the fuel tank through the chassis to the rear, where it connects with a piece of flexible hose to a metal line that also runs to the fuel pump.
The grommet or sleeve mentioned here is necessary to prevent damage to the hose. It is fixed to the front panel through which the fuel line passes.
In addition, this 8 mm grommet was used for the turn signal wiring on VW Beetle models up to model year 1954, and for the horn wiring on the Volkswagen Split Bus.
It appears to be a universal grommet, but nothing could be further from the truth. It's not available everywhere in this size. It has to fit perfectly, mainly around the fuel line as well as in the front panel, which is only possible with a properly sized grommet, as Volkswagen has developed.
