The oil filter system of the air-cooled Volkswagen is very primitive. Especially with engines type 1 and 3, the oil sieve is the only way to filter. The other engines are also equipped with an external oil filter that filters much better than the oil sieve (or oil screen).
The oil screen is located behind the crankcase cover (sump plate) and must be cleaned every time you change the oil. When the oil screen is clean, carefully check it for damage before using it again. To eliminate any risk, it is best to install a new strainer (oil sieve) immediately. Order new seals immediately, they are listed in the options tab, seals can never be reused.
Additional information about the engine :
For type 1 engines, some oil screens do not have a complete explanation of the application. If there is a letter after the engine displacement, it is the initial letter with which the engine number begins. If there is no month in the year of manufacture, it is up to and including a certain engine number. The engine numbers are listed below:
1200cc 1967 (up to and including D 0 234 158 or from D 0 234 159 )
1300cc 1967 (up to F 1 237 75 or from F 1 1237 76 onwards)
1300cc 1968 (up to E 0 017 055 or from D 0 017 056 )
1500cc with 1967 EGR (up to H 50 004 648 or from H 50 004 649 )
1500cc 1967 (up to L 0 014 572 or from L 0 014 573 ) to 1969 (up to L 0 024 235 or from L 0 024 236 )
EGR means exhaust gas recirculation system used in the United States and Canada.
