Depending on the year of manufacture and the VW model, the right-hand threaded spherical plain bearings are fastened with an M14 flat nut.
In addition, this nut was also used on Volkswagen's Bay Window Bus as a lock nut for the brake booster pressure rod.
To complete the applications, the same nut was also used to mount the pulley on the Volkswagen Bus alternator on the Type 4, CT/CZ, WBX and Diesel engines.
This nut is galvanized, rather than untreated steel like the original, or a lot more resistant to corrosion.
Excessive rusting and damage from the use of improperly chosen tools are the most common reasons that replacement is necessary.
