In many respects, Volkswagen was one step ahead of its competitors, when almost all cars had to be started with a manual choke, it was the "small" Volkswagen in which the choke system was automated. Everything that happens automatically can also fail. If your engine does not idle during a cold start, the automatic choke may be the problem. Check that the choke receives the electrical voltage from the battery and adjust the setting if necessary by loosening the outer ring so that the choke element can be rotated. When you turn the choke, you tighten the spring harder so that the choke stays in service longer. If the choke valve does not react when the power supply is applied, the choke is probably broken. In the case of a choke for the Weber carburetor or EMPI mounted on a type 1 engine, it is recommended to isolate the electrical connection of the choke, the space between the heater and the connection being minimal, which can cause a short circuit.
