In older Volkswagens, the window cranks or handles and the opening levers for the doors and sliding roof or ragtop are attached to the axle by a locking pin, in the last years of construction they were changed to a bolted assembly. By using a locking pin, it was possible to keep the assembly invisible quite simply, which benefited the overall finish.
These pins do not wear out as quickly, so losing them is the most common reason for their purchase.
