The most popular accessory is the tow bar, often ordered immediately after purchase, but most cars left the VW dealer without this option.
For each year of construction or model of Beetle, type 3 and Bus, there is a suitable tow bar which is delivered complete with cable box, wiring and tow ball.
For those who already have a tow ball and/or wiring box, the towing brackets with the necessary mounting hardware are also available separately.
As the tow bar can be delivered with or without a tow ball, the separate brackets with mounting hardware do not have a typeplate, which is located only on the tow ball.
If you order a complete drawbar, it is delivered with a tow ball approved in Europe including the typeplate. This tow ball is also available separately for your existing tow bar or for your own tow bar system.
The maximum support load of a tow ball is 200 kg (S value) and the D value (derived from the maximum weight of the trailer) is 17.2 kg. It is therefore the tow ball and the towing vehicle that determine whether the load can be pulled.
If the typeplate is missing, the coupling is legally inspected as untested and the trailer must not weigh more than 750 kg. In addition, the maximum vehicle tractive force must not be exceeded and you cannot drive a vehicle with a trailer if your driver's licence does not allow it.
Note : There is no standard arrangement for mounting the cable junction box on the drawbar. Therefore, you will need to find a creative solution by making a plate to mount the junction box on, or by mounting it directly to the drawbar (by drilling holes and tapping).
