If you need to have a key made, the locksmith will give you a model that differs from the original Volkswagen key. You can now order the right uncut key and have it sharpened by the locksmith.
Most of the time, the original Volkswagen key is still available, although the model may have changed a little over the years.
Volkswagen gave each key profile a certain letter or combination of letters, while some profiles have different letters or combinations of letters but they are identical to each other, which is very confusing but there must have been a reason for that at the time. The name of the profile has also been punched into the lock at a location not directly visible. With this profile name and the serial number (e.g. SG240 or SC153 ) you could order a key from your Volkswagen dealer.
The different key profiles are not interchangeable with each other. If you need an SC key on the left door and an SE key in the ignition, you will never be able to use both locks with only one key. In the 1950s, the ignition lock could be different from the doors and an extra key was often required to lock the engine hood.
Always carefully compare the shape and location of the grooves on both sides between the old key and the photo on site.
