Tightening and loosening studs without damaging them is a challenge for many. Tightening two nuts together and using the lower nut to unscrew the stud remains the safest method.
There's a better alternative: studs that can be secured with an Allen key. There's no risk of damaging the thread, and assembly is very quick.
The studs shown here have an 8 mm metric thread and a length of 40 mm, a size close to that used by Volkswagen at various points in the crankcase and for various other engine parts. These studs replace the original 38 mm long studs, so you have 2 mm extra space, which is considered very pleasing for all applications.
The studs have continuous threads, so keep in mind the remaining length when screwing in, and use locking fluid if necessary. Below is a list of the applications for which these studs are most often used:
- cylinder head exhaust on all air- and water-cooled boxer engines
- alternator bracket/breather on the crankcase of Type 1 and Type 3 engines
- igniter collar on the crankcase of Type 1 25 and 30 hp engines
- oil cooler support on Type 1 crankcase
- turbocharger on exhaust
