The gearbox on the Bay Window Bus is fitted with a plastic ball-and-socket joint at the end of the gearshift.
This plastic ball joint often causes problems, it wears out and breaks fairly quickly. Replacing the plastic ball joint with a hardened steel one eliminates this problem.
If, during an overhaul, it turns out that the original plastic ball joint is still in good condition, we recommend replacing it with a hardened steel one. Subsequent replacement poses no problem, but the engine and gearbox have to be dismantled, which is a lot of work for something that could have been avoided.
