When fitting a new starter, always replace the old starter bushing in the gearbox housing. This guide ring ensures that the starter motor runs without play in the gearbox housing.
If this ring is worn, the starter shaft will have play and lose its function more quickly. If the starter is dismantled, the bushing can be replaced without removing the engine.
In addition to originally fitted bushes, there are also conversion bushes which enable an older starter motor to be fitted in a newer gearbox, and vice versa. This happens mainly when a car equipped with a 6-volt power system is converted to 12 volts, or vice versa.
